KANU leaders from the Kisii community over the weekend officially launched the pro- Kibaki presidential campaign in the region with a strong advise to the youth to be careful not to be carried away by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) euphoria.
The leaders drawn from the 10 constituencies in the Gusii region dismissed the ODM leaders who are advocating for the introduction of Majimbo once they form the government and urged the youth not to vote for the party's torch bearer, Raila Odinga.
Elders who also attended the official launching of the campaign at Nyamasibi market in Nyaribari Masaba Constituency warned that should the Majimbo system be adopted, the Kisii community would be greatly affected and advised the community to reject it at all costs.
The campaign team which was led by former Health minister Prof Sam Ongeri described Raila as a man they do not fully trust.
They warned that they were hesitant to advice anybody to entrust power to him. Ongeri asked members from the community to rally behind Kibaki whom he said had a better vision for-this country compared to Raila and his team.
He noted that politics in this country had become tribal and therefore cautioned the community against forging alliances with communities which will not protect their' political and economical interests.
Ongeri further noted that the Kisii community was not well represented and that is why none of those who are selling the ODM party in the community were in the party's Pentagon group. "Magara and other political sycophants of Raila from the region claim that the community is well catered for in their party, let them come out and state which position the community has been given in the party if they are honest," Ongeri posed.
He-cautioned youths against being lured with money into voting Raila for the top seat, as "he has nothing to offer Kenyans".
On the Majimbo debate, Ongeri took issue with politicians from the community who were supporting the ODM, terming them as "traitors" of the community. He told the gathering that should the Kisii community support Majimbo, those who have bought land and own assets outside the region would lose them.
Ongeri explained that the community ditched the draft constitution during the referendum because it was advocating for the federal system of government, adding that the community will not make a mistake of accepting it through the back door.
Ongeri reminded the community that without the Luo's votes in Nyanza, they have the numbers and potential of giving a presidential candidate the required 25 percent from a province.
Kanu parliamentary aspirants Lumumba Nyaberi, Erneo Nyakiba, Wifred Ombui, Phillip Obote, Andrew Nyamwanda and Thomas Sese said those supporting Raila's presidency were against the culture of Abagusii and were in for trouble.
They observed that the community's culture was different from the Luos and therefore there is no way they can blend the different cultures. Nyaberi and Ombui who are contesting for the Bobasi and North Mugirango parliamentary seat claimed that Raila while in London talked in a manner that seemed to belittle the community.
The over 800 youths who graced the occasion disclosed that majority of the youths had shown support for Raila because their political leaders, especially MPs had failed to address their plight.
They said that they are ready to support Kibaki's re-elections on the condition that Kanu takes charge of his campaigns in the region but not Nyachae's Ford People party.
