Police have arrested three people in connection with the theft of sugar worth Sh4 million. They also recovered the 800 bags of sugar stolen while on transit to Kisii from Mumias Sugar factory. Kisii OCPD Peter Njenga said the lorry’s driver is among the suspects.
He said gangsters in a white saloon car blocked the lorry ferrying the sugar at Katito area on Kisumu-Ahero road and drove it towards Kericho.
Police swung into action after the lorry’s owner reported the matter. "We used a car track system to get the movement of the lorry after leaving Mumias five days ago," Mr Njenga said in his office, on Monday. They traced the lorry to Kericho, laid an ambush and impounded the cargo.

He said the device indicated the engine of the lorry was switched off for sometime and later re-ignited, saying all this happened after the attackers had offloaded the sugar.
Detectives traced some 549 bags in three shops in Brooke Market. He said before the hijack, the driver was communicating with the owner, but his phone went off moments later.
Consequently, the police boss said the driver is a key suspect. He said the ill-fated lorry was driven to Kisii, adding they have since seized the pick up, which was used to distribute the sugar.Meanwhile, police arrested a suspect and recovered bhang worth Sh6,000 destined for Nairobi from Migori. Njenga said the suspect who was boarding a matatu, had stashed the drug in three polythene bags.
