More pressure on Ongeri to resign

The civil society has Monday threatened to mobilize nationwide mass action to oust Education minister Professor Sam Ongeri and his Permanent Secretary (PS) Professor Karega Mutahi if President Kibaki does not sack them within 7 days from Monday.

Addressing a press conference at a Nairobi hotel, civil society activist Okia Omtatah said that it was an insult for the Kenyans to wait for the Kenya Anti Corruption Commission (KACC) investigations on Prof Ongeri and the PS  over the Free Primary Education (FPE) money.

"We reiterate our earlier call for the immediate exit of Education Minister and his PS to facilitate independent investigations into the theft , mismanagement and the wastage of money and other resources allocated to the education of children especially those in poor families", Omtatah said.

He added that the two had the capacity to interfere with and frustrate investigations if they do not step aside saying that they had committed themselves to be fully accountable to the people of Kenya when they accepted the responsibility of leading in the Education docket.,

"Donors are even withdrawing their support to the ministry because they are not sure whether their money will be wisely spent to help school children" he reiterated saying that they refuse to be spectators in the failure.

According to a speech given by Mr Benji Ndolo, Head of Communications at Name and Shame Communications Corruption Network (NASCON), their continued intimidating presence at Jogoo house will hinder investigations and gag on the staff at the Ministry who might want to stand up and tell the truth.

Corruption, Ndolo said is destroying the country and on behalf of the Civil society demand that those who allow corruption to take root under their watch be dealt with according to the law.

The Civil Society termed Kenya's education sector as having suffered gross negligence and abuse noting that it was unfair for donors to withdraw their financial support since the Kenyan taxpayer alone cannot afford to address the many challenges faced by the education sector .

Elsewhere, residents of Nyaribari Masaba Constituency have defended the Education Minister following calls for him to step aside to allow investigations into the alleged misappropriation of free primary education funds.

Over 2000 residents, who staged a peaceful demonstration along the Masimba - Keroka - Kisii Highway in solidarity with the Minister, said Prof. Ongeri was not the Ministry's accounting officer and was not therefore responsible for the alleged embezzled funds.

Chanting pro-Ongeri slogans and waving placards, the group said the Prime Minister's recent recommendation for Prof. Ongeri and his PS to step aside pending investigations was political and ill motivated.
