Nyachae Denies Plot To Oust Former AG Njonjo

FORMER Cabinet minister Simeon Nyachae yesterday denied in court plotting to oust former Charles Njonjo when he was the Attorney General.
Nyachae told the high court that he was a respectable person and could not have "conducted myself behind the scenes to bring down Njonjo The politician told Justice Kalpana Rawal that he was embarrassed by an article in the Standard newspaper. He was giving evidence in a case where he has sued the newspaper over the article published six years ago.
The article published on June 20,2004, linked the former Nyaribari Chache MP to a group of powerful ministers who allegedly plotted the downfall of Njonjo. "When the article was published, I was at pains. I struggled to explain myself to my friends and business associates that no in way could I have been involved in such a dubious scheme," he told the judge.
He said the paper put him in an embarrassing situation and as a result he suffered mentally. He said the article damaged his status in the society. Apart from being a large scale farmer with vast business interest, Nyachae . says he is also the chairman of Credit Bank, Kenindia Assurance, director of Paper House and the Sotik Tea Company among others companies.
The former Nyaribari Chache MP then dismissed allegations that he resigned from government in 1999 because of the same issue. He wants the court to award him damages arising out of the alleged defamation.
