PUBLIC health officials in Kisii yesterday disposed of 95 unclaimed bodies at the Kisii cemetery.
The bodies included 23 of adults and 72 stillbirths. The bodies from the Kisii Level Five hospital morgue were buried in a mass grave. District public health officer Francis Makau said the bodies were buried after the expiry of a 21-day notice to relatives. I further gave the relatives the relatives another week to collect the bodies but they refused," Makau said.
He said some of the bodies had decomposed beyond recognition because they had been in the mortuary for more than five months. "We could not afford to wait longer because, the smell that emanated from the rotting bodies had become a nuisance to members of the public," he said. Makau said the mortuary has a capacity of 24 bodies, but has more than 100 bodies. He said bodies should be collected for burial within seven days.
The public cemetery is full and the Kisii municipal council is yet to find an alternative site. Mayor Samwel Nyangeso has said the council is in the process of identifying a new site.
"We are looking for an alternative site to relocate the public cemetery but at the moment the graves have to be squeezed," Nyangeso said.
