Kisii Level Five To Become Referral Hospital For Gusii

Kisii Level Five Hospital will be used as a referral hospital for the Gusii region when its upgrade is complete, Medical Services PS James Kiyiapi has said.

Speaking at the hospital at the weekend, Kiyiapi said Level Five will by December handle referral cases. Kenya officially has only two referral hospitals Kenyatta National and Moi Teaching and Referral. But in the last two years, the Medical Services ministry has been expanding health facilities in the provinces to reduce congestion in the two hospitals. Kiyiapi announced the new status for Kisii Level Five when he opened the hospital's ultra-modern outpatient wing.

The PS said the government will hire medics and experts to serve the rising number of patients. He said the hospital is now well equipped to serve as a referral hospital for the Gusii region. The Sh630 million upgrade is being funded by the government and Japan, through its organisation, the Japan International Development Agency.

The PS said the hospital will be opened by President Kibaki or Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The PS said the state will equip and hire enough workers for the hospital. He said the ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kisii University College to use it in offering courses in medicine and health sciences.

"Already, more than 1,000 prospective students have applied for the courses which will start in May," KUC principal John said Akama.

Akama said the university will start using the hospital in May to offer diploma courses in pharmacy, clinical medicine and lab technology. The principal and Kiyiapi were accompanied by Nyanza province director of medical services, Dr Luci
