South Mugirango candidates go door-to-door

Eleven aspirants cleared to run for the South Mugirango parliamentary seat have embarked on door-to-door campaigns.

Last week, area district commissioner Geofrey Mayama banned funds drives in Kisii South until the by-election was over.

He also banned political speeches at funerals and asked chiefs to inform security officials about all burials in the constituency.

Following the ban, the candidates have resolved to campaign in their strongholds instead of holding political rallies.

Others have resorted to meeting small groups of people in their homes and at hotels.

Former MP Omingo Magara, who is seeking to regain his seat on a People’s Democratic Party ticket after ditching ODM, has been campaigning door-to-door in the constituency for two weeks.

Mr Magara said rallies would be held later. “We have not drawn up our campaign programme but I want to warn of a bruising battle,” he said.

Ford People’s Manson Nyamweya has also set up camp in the constituency after launching his campaign last week.

ODM’s Ibrahim Ochoi, who has been traversing the constituency, promised a massive campaign.

He said he expected his party’s officials to help him capture seat.

“I have set up base here and promise to deliver the seat,” Mr Ochoi said.
