Motorcycle taxi operator shot by police

A 25-year-old man is fighting for his life at the Kisii Level-5 hospital after he was allegedly shot by police in Borabu district on Sunday.

Mr Eric Nyabuto, a motorbike taxi operator, was shot at his home in Manga Raitigo sub-location of Esise location after he tried to hide from them because of an incident a moth ago.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Mr Nyabuto said police arrested him a month ago because his motorbike did not meet traffic requirements.

Mr Nyabuto said he was put in the cell until the following day when they temporarily released him to make a call home a but he capitalised on the chance to escape.

“I don’t know why they shot me because I have never been involved in crime. I escaped because I didn’t have a bribe to give in order for them to release my motorcycle,” he said.

The victim said he spotted the officers who had arrested him earlier at Manga shopping centre and attempted to escape. They shot him from behind, he said.

Contacted, Keroka police boss Ranson Lolmodon denied the victim’s claim saying he was being sought for various offences.

He added that Mr Nyabuto was shot after he confronted the officers with a panga.
