Student kills mother over land proceeds

A student reportedly murdered his mother at Bokinami village, Gucha District, following a dispute over land. Villagers and relatives were yet to come to terms with the macabre killing of the 40-year-old woman.

The suspect, 17, is a Form Two student and is said to have accosted his mother as she returned from their farm at around 7pm, at the weekend.

Sources said a quarrel ensued over proceeds from a piece of land the widow had sold earlier, with the son demanding his share. The deceased told her son to be patient as she organised to give him the money.

But the son allegedly grabbed a panga his mother was carrying and chased after her as she fled for her life, but she tripped and fell down. The boy then pounced on his mother and cut her on the head and forearms severally before slitting open her throat, killing her instantly.

At the time

Police from the nearby Sameta Administration Police Post later arrested the boy and took him to Ogembo Police Station, where he is being held.

Gucha OCPD Richard Ng’etich said the boy claimed he did not know what he was doing at the time of the incident. "The boy claims he differed with his mother because she had refused to pay school fees for him," said Mr Ng’etich. Police moved her body to Kisii Level Five Hospital Mortuary.

Separately, police in Gucha are holding a woman for attempting to poison her three children and commit suicide.

The woman, an AP’s wife, wrote a suicide note and handed it to an officer at the AP camp before locking up her house together with the three children at lunchtime.

Police within the compound grew suspicious when her daughter, 12, raised the alarm, and forced the door open. The woman had allegedly forced her children to drink tea laced with rat poison. AP Commandant Julius Mukanda said several sachets of the rat poison were recovered from the house. She had reportedly differed with her husband who had accused her of being unfaithful. The suicide note contained phone numbers of her relatives.
