Police have been put on high alert following the killing of two women in Nyamira. The victims identified as Alice Makori, 60, and Jemima Kemuma, 56, were allegedly dragged from their houses on Monday night and hacked to death along a footpath in their Nyaguku village, Manga District.
Their bodies were found lying on the road yesterday morning. Their homes are about 500m apart. At the scene of crime, Manga DC Onesmus Kyatha said security officers would pitch tent at the area until perpetrators of the heinous acts are brought to book.
Addressing residents at Alice’s home, Kyatha said the county security system would unite to contain insecurity in the area. He condemned the killing of the women.
Area Councillor Juma Mogeni suspected the killers were from the community and urged residents to volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
Kyatha said they had anticipated insecurity to escalate last month when tea growers received their bonuses and not this festive month.
MP’s plea to State
Condemning the killings, Mogeni urged residents to respect the sanctity of human life and refuse not to be used by anyone to kill neighbours.
Kyatha said Administration Police officers from the nearby Magombo line arrested some youth on Monday night aboard motorbikes in the area. He said they would be grilled to establish if they had any connection with the killings. Kitutu Masaba MP Walter Nyambati, in whose constituency the deaths occurred, urged the Government to beef up security. He said in the past one month, several similar crimes had been committed in the area and the situation needed urgent intervention.
Over the weekend, a clergyman, Evans Orina Momanyi, was butchered in the presence of his hapless wife in the neighbouring West Mugirango constituency.
