Committee gets boundaries views from MPs

The Parliamentary Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs has commenced collecting views from MPs concerning the controversial creation of 80 new constituencies.

In its first meeting, the Committee heard views from MPs from North Eastern and Kisii regions. The move comes after direction by Speaker Kenneth Marende that the Committee seek views of MPs following deliberations at Kenya Institute of Administration on Monday.

MPs from North Eastern Province wanted the vast North Horr constituency and Wajir South be split into two each, an argument that was floated by Wajir South. MP Mahamud Sirat, North Horr’s Chachu Ganya and Nominated MP Mohamed Affey.

On the other hand, Defence Minister Yusuf Hajji wanted a new electoral unit carved out of Ijara, Fafi and Lagdera constituencies. Nominated MP Sophia Abdi supported him. And Nyaribari Chache MP Robert Monda and Nominated MP George Nyamweya wanted Borabu to be a single constituency other than being merged with North Mugirango. They argued Borabu has its unique features since it is a settlement scheme. Monda said North Mugirango should surrender some locations to Borabu to form a constituency.
