A secondary school head in Gucha has been demoted for allegedly failing to discipline teachers said to have impregnated students.
Nyanza Provincial Director of Education Geoffrey Cherongis said the principal of Mosora Mixed Secondary, Wilson Siocha had been demoted and is being investigated over why he took no action against the said teachers.
"We have launched investigation into the matter and some of the affected girls have recorded statements with our officers. Ultimately, action will be taken against the teachers implicated," said Mr Cherongis.
He announced that a teacher from outside Kisii would be posted to the school to restore sanity, following a clash pitting students against teachers last week. Students protesting at the principal’s transfer pelted teachers with stones and locked up the staffroom, paralysing learning.
Nyamache DEO Peter Njoroge chaired an emergency Board of Governors meeting at the school to restore normalcy.
Teachers who spoke to The Standard expressed fears they may be victimised for opposing ills perpetrated at the institution.
During the meeting, the BoG moved a vote of no confidence in the principal and asked him to keep off the school.
Other teachers demoted
"We discussed all the issues. Teachers agreed to go back to work and the school is now in session. All investigatory reports are at the PDE’s office awaiting action," said Mr Njoroge.
On Friday, Cherongis announced that 28 teachers had been demoted or deployed elsewhere in the province following an inspection on financial management and academic performance. Some 45 teachers were promoted to principals while 50 others were transferred in the changes aimed at improving performance.
The PDE said letters to that effect were dispatched to schools on Friday while others will get theirs this week.
