Two children killed, 2 injured as car rams house

Two children were killed when a vehicle rammed a house they were playing in while two people were injured during the accident at Etono market in Kenyenya District.

And following the incident, locals doused the vehicle with petrol and set it ablaze.

A witness, Richard Mainga, said the station wagon car, which was being driven at high speed, veered off the road and hit two elderly men, who were standing at a butchery, before ramming a neighbouring shop.

"The children were playing on the verandah minutes earlier, but they went inside. Moments later, the car hit the house," said Mr Mainga.

The children were identified as Deborah Isaiah, seven, and Huldah Isaiah, three. Their seven-month-old sister who was asleep on a bed survived unscathed.

"I lost my children as I watched. I saw the vehicle ram the house from another shop where I sat. It is too much to accept," said a shocked Isaiah Nyandieka, the deceased’s father.

Speeding

Their mother, Gladys Nyandieka, was selling wares at the same market centre when the accident occurred on Wednesday at 6pm.

The driver and passengers of the vehicle escaped unhurt.

Police led by Gucha Traffic Base Commander Vincent Omuse arrived at the scene, but the injured had been rushed to Kisii Level Five Hospital.

Leg severed

"This appears to be a case of speeding but we have launched investigation. The injured men are admitted to the same hospital, but one is in critical condition and is unable to speak," said Mr Omuse.

The men sustained deep cuts to the head and one had his leg severed in the accident.

The police officer warned motorists to approach built-up areas like market centres cautiously to avoid such accidents.

The bodies were taken to the Kisii Level Five Hospital mortuary.

On Monday night, eight school children and a woman died after a pick-up truck they were travelling in rolled several times.

The accident occurred on Kakamega-Mumias road. Eighteen other people sustained serious injuries in the accident.
