Man killed in fight with cattle rustlers

A man was killed and 20 animals driven away by rustlers in Marakwet West on Monday.The gang armed with AK-47 rifles had attacked Kapterit Village and raided a homestead that had the most animals in the area.Villagers armed themselves and tracked down the rustlers in Kabolet Forest, where a fight took place.

Mr Jackson Ling’wakan, 35, was shot dead during the fighting that also left several others injured.Marakwet West police chief Philip Opiyo said officers in Kacheliba intercepted the raiders around 3pm.“Nineteen of the 20 stolen cattle were recovered, but no-one was arrested,” he said.

In Nyanza Province, rustlers struck in two homes and stole four cows in Borabu.They stole one dairy cow from the home of retired chief Gideon Gikenyi and three from Mr Henry Nyabuto in Isoge-Kineni Sub-location.Area assistant chief Euphan Rosana said the animals were suspected to have been driven to the neighbouring Sotik District.
