A man in Nyamira County has allegedly abandoned his wife in hospital because she gave birth to a baby girl. The woman, who underwent a caesarean section operation in Nyamira District Hospital three weeks ago, says her husband refused to clear the bill so that she could be discharged, saying he was tired of seeing children of the same gender in his house.
The woman, who hails from Nyameru village, says her children, who include two twins (a set of twins is counted as one child in the area), are all girls, something her husband is unhappy with. Speaking at the hospital, the woman claimed the husband last visited her the day she gave birth and when he realised she had given birth to a baby girl, he went home a dejected man, never to return.
She said attempts to reach him and convince him to clear the bill, which by last week amounted to Sh6,000, had not borne fruit and she was suffering in the hospital.
Foot the bill
She said she has no control over her woes because it is God who gives children and He alone can decide the sex of the child.
But in a shocking turn, her brother-in-law said the husband had refused to foot the bill because the woman was not faithful. Her husband’s brother, who was accompanied by his mother, arrived at the hospital soon after the matter was reported by an FM station and insisted that his brother did not even want to see the wife.
A source at the hospital said they were trying to persuade the family to raise some money after a half-way waiver so that the woman could be discharged.
According to the source, the maternity wing of the hospital is overstretched because many expectant mothers are turning up to deliver there due to the quality of services offered.
Indeed, while pursuing the story, we saw six pregnant women arrive and directed to the wards within the 30 minutes we were in the hospital.
The boy child is highly cherished in the Gusii community and some families break up when they don’t get one.
Shift blame
But medics say it is the sex cell of the man that determines the sex of the child to be born although many men tend to shift the blame to their wives when their preferred choice does not come forth.
According to Internet sources, gametes are sex cells from the parents, which determine the sex of the child. The male is the parent whose gametes determine the sex. The female produces gametes with only X sex chromosomes.
The male produces gametes with either the X or Y sex chromosome. When the male and female gametes join, the cell formed will have a full set of chromosomes. It will get an X from the female and either X or Y from the male. XX makes a female child while XY makes a male child.
