An assistant chief has been hacked to death on his way home. Mr Joram Chagusia of Vokoli sub-location in Sabatia District was confronted by two men near an Administration Police camp at Sabatia market, who stabbed him in the stomach with machetes on Wednesday night.

Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi criticised the killing.Mr Mudavadi, who is also the area MP, called on police to step up patrols to tackle the upsurge in insecurity.

Never carried out

“Acts of vandalism, theft, mugging, gangsters and murder have in the recent past increased in Sabatia under the seeming lethargy of security forces in the area,” said Mr Mudavadi in a statement. “In most cases, investigations are never carried out.” Local leaders have called for the transfer of security chiefs over their laxity.

The district CID head, Mr Harrison Meme, said investigations into the administrator’s killing had been launched.

In Nyamira North, angry mourners dumped the body of a man outside the area district commissioner’s office as they protested the release of the suspected assailant.

Efforts by the DC’s guards to stop the mourners from dumping the body were futile.

Those carrying the coffin surged forward despite security officers threatening to shoot them.

“We are ready to die so long as there is justice over this murder. Shoot us, we are ready to die,” one of the mourners shouted.

Suspended burial

The mourners suspended the burial of Mr Evans Oboywa Matwere, 45, on Wednesday afternoon and marched from his Itibo home to the district headquarters, about 10 kilometres away, on learning that a man suspected of killing him had been released.

Mr Matwere was allegedly killed by a woman relative and hired gangsters.The relative, who has since been arrested and charged with the killing, is said to have been unhappy with his decision to marry another wife.
