Knut Boss Appeals to TSC Over Intern Teachers

Knut boss David Osiany has asked the government to employ teachers hired as interns because it is unfair to continue having them work as temporary staff. "It is unfair that while their colleagues on permanent terms are earning their full salaries, this category of teachers were still being paid peanuts yet they are doing the same work" Osiany said.

Knut will not relent on demands to have the affected cadre treated fairly by the Teachers Service Commission. He was speaking in Busia town at the weekend when he presided over the local branch elections which saw the former officials replaced by new faces in peaceful polls at the Busia Municipal Stadium.

The union chief said his team will strive to have outstanding allowances agreed between the government and teachers paid out. All Gucha South Knut officials were voted out at the weekend in elections which saw major upsets across Kisii County.

Stephen Obiri was elected chairman while Joseph Makabe is the new branch executive secretary. Sammy Nyairo was elected branch secretary in Gucha after getting 713 votes against his closest rival and immediate former secretary Isaiah Nyariki who got 532 votes.

Stephen Otundo retained his post of chairman. Nyairo later toured the district and thanked teachers for backing him. "I thank teachers for showing faith in me. I am ready to work for them to create a union that listens to and respects their wishes," said Nyairo.

In Kisii South, the union's Nyanza Province Council chairman Geoffrey Mogire lost to Charles Mokua, the immediate former branch secretary. John Makori was elected chairman while Margaret Ogega retained her post of branch treasurer.

In Kisii central branch, Shem Nyaundi was re-elected branch executive secretary, Haroun Gwoma (treasurer) while Peter Rianga, a new-comer was elected chairman.

Evans Kaunda was elected assistant executive secretary, Macrina Okindo (women's representative) and Albert Ondimu assistant treasurer.
