Sh1.1 Million Bhang Seized in Nyamira

Police in Nyamira County yesterday seized a bhang haul estimated to be worth Sh1.1 million after a dramatic shootout with suspected traffickers.

Area police chief Dishon Chakada said officers acting on a tip off flagged down a car in Nyamira North District but the driver defied the order and instead brandished a pistol. "The officers were compelled to shoot to deflate the tyres after the suspects declined to stop after they were flagged down. The officers managed to impound 2,221 stones and 120 rolls," Chadaka said. He said the car had tinted windows but there were two occupants visible in the vehicle. Chadaka said there was a fierce exchange of fire before the traffickers abandoned the car and ran away on foot.

Initial reports from the police indicated that the consignment was being ferried from Tanzania and was destined for Nairobi. "We will increase patrols on the major highways in order to curb the illicit business which has really messed up lives of young Kenyans," he said. Bhang traffickers use the Chabera-Ekerenyo rough road to escape arrest by the police who man the main highway.

The road is a shortcut that links the Migori-Kisii, Kisii-Kericho and Kisii-Narok roads. Last month, a consignment worth Sh1 million was seized in the district.
