TWO people have died in Gucha South district after drinking chang'aa. Ali Makori and his uncle Charles Oyako died at Nyamue village where they had gone on a drinking spree.
Police confirmed that only one person died but villagers claimed Makori's uncle Oyako had also succumbed after taking the brew. He died while he was being taken to Tabaka Mission hospital. Other villagers who also took the brew were still drunk 24 hours later.
Relatives claimed that others had been taken to hospitals after failing to recover from the effects of the brew. The director of the hospital Fr Raphael Wanjau said the two were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Area DC Geofrey Mayama denied claims that the two died after taking chang'aa. "Police did not recover the brew from the alleged home but we have started investigations on the deaths," he said.
Mayama appealed to members of the public to volunteer any information regarding the deaths. Family members of the deceased said the two are addicts of chang'aa. Brewing of chang'aa in the district is prevalent due to easy access of raw materials from sugarcane jaggeries.
