A mother allegedly killed her 14-year-old daughter while trying to discipline her after she stole and sold maize from their store, in Nyangiti Location.
The suspect, aged 32, reportedly questioned her daughter before beating her up for close to 30 minutes at 10.30pm on Friday night.
The victim, a Standard Seven pupil at a private primary school in Kisii South, allegedly stole an equivalent of four kilogrammes of maize and sold it.
The mother beat her as the other children watched helplessly and pleas from the deceased for mercy fell on deaf ears. Police said the girl’s body had cracks on the skull, believed to have been inflicted by the rod her mother used. Nyangiti Location Chief Ogega Rasugu told The Standard the woman dumped her daughter’s body on a chair when she fell silent.
The woman’s brother-in-laws rushed to the scene when the cries became too much, but it was too late as the child had died. On realising the child was dead, the woman took off at midnight to her home in Menyinkwa, Kisii Central.
Blood stained rod
She was arrested at Kisii Level Five Hospital’s staff quarters where she had gone to hide at her sister’s house and taken to Ogembo Police Station where she is being held.A blood stained rod and panga were recovered from the scene. Nyamonema village was in mourning as irate residents searched for the woman threatening to lynch her.
Her husband who works in Kuria was away at the time of the incident. The woman’s relatives said she was violent. A family source disclosed that one child escaped death narrowly after being rushed to hospital following heavy beating by the woman. Gucha OCPD Richard Ng’etich said the woman will be arraigned in court to face murder charges once investigation is complete.
