TEACHERS in Kisii have rejected the comprehensive medical cover proposed by the Ministry of Public Service. Through Kuppet, they said the proposal was flawed and wants disparities in salaries and allowances between teachers and other civil servants harmonised.
Kuppet Kisii secretary Shem Nyaundi said they will reject efforts by the government to force the scheme down their throat.“This scheme only covers two children. Where will other dependants go?” asked Nyaundi who was accompanied by branch chairman Paul Onchera and treasurer Jared Bosire.“The proposed scheme only covers two children while teachers have up to five children and more. The minister should first harmonise salaries and allowances of teachers to be at par with civil servants before introducing the scheme,” added Nyaundi.“Currently, teachers subscribe to the National Hospital Insurance Fund which caters for more children but they hardly benefit owing to the poor state of our hospitals. Insurance companies take long to clear claims and teachers want an assurance on this,” said Nyaundi.
The teachers said the cost of living had gone up with spiraling prices of commodities and any deduction on teacher’s earnings won’t be allowed.
