EDUCATION stakeholders have been warned against nominating illiterate people to school committees and boards of governors. Immediate former Kenya National Union of Teachers treasurer Fred Ontere said schools were performing dismally due to poor management and leadership. "As stakeholders we should nominate people who have at least reached Form four to the boards and school committees who can add input into education," said Ontere. He said schools boards and management committees should consist of professionals.
Ontere and Bobasi CDF Committee chairman Nicky Magara challenged professionals to take a leading role in improving education standards.
Speaking in Nyanuguti Primary School during a fundraiser Magara said, "As professionals we should accept to be on school boards as one way of giving back to society."
Magara took issue with some stakeholders including parents who have abdicated their duties."Parents must go an extra mile to ensure that they provide for their children the necessities and check on their education progress throughout," Magara said. He also noted that some parents were not taking their children to school despite of the government providing free education to all.
Kenya National Union of Teachers Gucha branch executive secretary Sammy Nyairo said his union has set a strategy of visiting poorly performing schools and hold meetings with teachers to come up with ways of improving standards.
Nyairo said most schools posted very poor results and as a union they have a role to play in ensuring that the schools work hard to better their results.
