Nyamira residents protest insecurity

Residents of Makairo in West Mugirango over the weekend held a peaceful demonstration protesting escalating cases of insecurity in the area.

Three people including an assistant chief have been attacked and injured by thugs in the region. Bigege assistant chief Justus Okenye was nursing his wounds in Nyamira District Hospital following an attack by thugs. Speaking from his hospital bed, Okenye said the gang robbed him of his mobile phone and money.

The Chief who had panga cuts on his head and index finger of his left hand said thugs were terrorizing residents and that is why they were demonstrating.

The residents said three cows belonging to Abere Otieno were poisoned. Otieno who works as a watchman in a local school said he had gone on night duty when he was called at around 8pm and informed that his cows had mysteriously died. “Because of escalating cases of insecurity, I instructed my wife not to step outside or open the door,” Otieno said.

His wife said she heard some commotion outside but was afraid to open the door and see what was happening. Otieno said his cows had been fine that day and the cause of death could only be determined by vets.

Two days ago, Otieno’s brother was attacked by a gang armed with crude weapons and sustained several cuts in the hand.“We are very much incensed with what is happening here. A day after three people were attacked, three cows have been poisoned. The law enforcers must act fast before things go bad,” the villagers said.“The robbers made made a series of robberies in various trading centres before they disappeared to unknown destination. We appealing to the to assure us of our security” a villager who identified himself as Ken said. “If a chief can be attacked them were not safe as the inhabitants. If nothing will be done we will be compelled to hold a series of demonstration,” he added.
