Two suspected thugs feigned death after they were burnt by an irate mob in Nyamira County, and 'resurrected' as they were being ferried to a mortuary.
Police said they thought the two had died after a mob used tyres and firewood to burn them at Sironga trading centre, West Mugirango. But on the way to Nyamira District Hospital Mortuary, they established the suspects were still alive.
A police officer who was hanging on the vehicle who was reportedly frightened when he saw the presumed bodies shaking informed his colleagues that the men were alive. Police station chief David Mwange took the two the hospital accident and casualty section. But hospital sources said one of the suspects died only hours after admission.
They sustained serious burns. The survivors, who identified himself only as Wycliffe, had his hand broken and with a rope around his stomach area, a sign they were tortured before being set on fire.
Speaking amid pain, Wycliff said they were on their way home when they were rounded up by the mob. He could not disclose where they were coming from. Their homes had not been known either. It was a rare incident that attracted curious workers and patients.
The police, who also appeared perplexed, handled the suspects with caution even as Wycliff woke up and sipped a glass of water. Mwange said the men were found at dawn in a hurry, carrying a DVD player and some cosmetics from unknown destination.
