Kisii Municipal Council staff have welcomed the transfer of chief officers and are demanding an audit of the municipality. Through the Kenya Local Government Workers Union Kisii branch the workers said the transfer of clerk Maina Chira and treasurer Albert Sese was long overdue.
Chira was transferred to Ijara and replaced by William Chepkonga, while Sese was moved to Lamu. A new treasurer is yet to be sent. "We welcome the transfers and we are petitioning the minister for Local Government to send auditors to probe the council books," said branch chairman Simon Mokandu.
Mokandu who was accompanied by the secretary Tom Gwaro said there were cases of massive embezzlement of funds at the municipality.
They also demanded the release of an audit report which unearthed malpractices at the council. "Who is sitting on the report? We want it to be released immediately and action be taken on those found to have misused funds," said Mokandu.
They asked the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission to expedite investigations. "We are aware that the KACC is doing investigations but we want the investigations completed and culprits taken to court," said Gwaro.
On Sunday, a section of councillors led by Finance chairman Alloys Moseti petitioned the government to rescind the decision to transfer the two chief officers, terming the transfers malicious.
