Police in Nyamira County arrested a woman over the weekend after she allegedly killed and buried her child moments after giving birth. Lilian Nyakina was nabbed in Bowendo village, Kitutu Masaba constituency after word went round that the baby boy she delivered on Friday went missing. It would not immediately be established why the single mother of four who lives with her mother killed the child. Her mother Florence Nyaboke said her daughter delivered at home without any assistance.
Nyaboke said she was surprised renwhen she learnt that the child was in the house and soon the report reached Manga District AP Commandant, W.Watua who mobilized his juniors to dash to the home and establish what had taken place. The officers had difficult time restraining infuriated residents who had thronged the home to catch a glimpse of what was happening. Nyakina admitted she killed the child and buried him in the maize farm because she would not be able to bring it up.
Astonishingly, the woman allegedly buried the infant with the assistance of one of her sons aged eight who helped dig the shallow grave.
Police led by Nyamira OCS, David Mwange, exhumed the body, wound in old clothes and took it to Nyamira District Hospital Mortuary. The suspect was taken to Nyamira police station cells.
In the same County, a man who allegedly used a hot machete to scald his younger brother has been released from police custody under unclear circumstances. The suspect who was arrested by police at Nyamaiya trading centre in West Mugirango constituency was reportedly released after the victim, Hesbon Masaki who had implicated him said he was actually burnt by accident.
