Mylife is in danger, claims Kisii mayor

Kisii mayor Samuel Nyangeso yesterday claimed his life was at threat for rebuking land grabbing and corruption in the municipality. Nyangeso said he had received information plans had been hatched to execute him if he continued to speak out about the evils committed by a section of civic leaders. “I have received threats that I will be shot if a continue speaking about the evils that are bedeviling the council. If it means dying, I am ready but the truth must be told,” Nyangeso said during Madaraka Day celebrations at the Gusii Stadium. He said wrangles by councillors are paralysing operations in the council.

Nyangeso told councillors who skipped the ceremony that they must realise that they were elected to deliver services to the electorates. “The civic leaders should know that they are not above the law. They must know that they were not elected to the council to loot peoples’ property,” he said. He blamed the local authority’s current mess to the transferred chief officers alleging that they were not running the affairs of the council properly. Town clerk Maina Chira who was transferred to Ijara County Council was replaced by Willaima Chepkwony.

Treasurer Albert Sese whom the councillors are trying to fight his transfer was moved to Kwale. “The civic leaders are protecting some officers who have since defrauded the council of about Sh30 million,” the mayor said. Nyangeso asked Local Government minister Musalia Mudavadi to intervene.

Responding to Nyangeso’s fears, Eastern Nyanza regional commissioner Lydiah Muriuki asked him to record a statement with the police for investigations.

Muriuki at the same time cautioned the civic leaders that the government will not sit down and watch as a few individuals sabotage operations. “The councillors should be warned that they will not condone their unfortunate activities which have denied the public the right of services,” Muriuki warned.

The PC said it was upsetting that the council has failed to deliver to the public because of a clique of persons who are championing for selfish interests.
