Panic At Kisii Council As KACC Swings Into Action

Panic has gripped the Kisii Municipal Council after it emerged that some councillors may face criminal charges which may bar them from contesting next month's mayoral elections.

A team from the Kenya Anti Corruption Commission has been investigating various cases of corruption involving the councillors and chief officers. Some councillors are also being investigated for allegedly grabbing plots from orphans, widows and prominent personalities in the town and selling them.

The councillors allegedly collude with council workers and the Ministry of Lands officials to forge title deeds and later sell the plots to unsuspecting people. Some councillors have formed companies which are doing business with the council, sources at the council said.

A source at the KACC said up to six civic leaders and some workers are being probed. Those facing criminal charges will not be allowed to contest for positions during the elections, according to the law.

The commission's officer in charge of western Kenya David Too last week told the Star that they are probing the council after a public outcry over land grabbing and other corrupt activities. "Some of the cases can be handled by police but we are targeting cases which are in our docket," said Too.

Sources said another team of investigators had been dispatched from Nairobi. Speaking during Madaraka day celebrations, Kisii mayor Sam Nyangeso claimed that his life was in danger following his relentless war against corruption and land grabbing. Nyangeso accused police of doing little in the war against corruption and land grabbing saying nothing had been done following numerous complaints.
