Kibaki, Raila tour Kisii this weekend

The president will visit the area tomorrow on invitation of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Southern Kenya Conference while the premier will be there on Sunday.

Confirming the visit, Education Minister Sam Ongeri said the President will lay a foundation stone for a Sh500 million building that would be the headquarters of the church at Nyanchwa on the outskirts of Kisii Town. President Kibaki will also officially open an ultra-modern outpatient wing at the Kisii Level Five Hospital, which was constructed by the Government with assistance from  Japan at a cost of Sh580 million.

Ongeri said the president will take lunch at the Kisii University College. He is also scheduled to open new hostels at the university.

The climax of the president’s tour will be a fundraiser in aid of the church’s project at Gusii Stadium. All the 11 local MPs and a host of Cabinet ministers will accompany the President.

Sources confided to The Standard that the MPs met yesterday morning and discussed their development agenda where they agreed to push for tarmacking of three roads, one in each of the area’s constituencies. On the other hand, the premier will be hosted by South Mugirango MP Manson Nyamweya to preside over a church function in the legislator’s constituency. Later, the PM is expected to address a leaders meeting at a Kisii hotel where the forthcoming ODM grassroots elections will feature.

Meanwhile, the Abagusii Cultural and Development Council has prepared a list of projects they wish the Coalition Government to give priority.

The projects include elevation of the Kisii University College to a full university and revamping of Gusii Institute of Technology and Keroka Technical Training Institute.

The leaders also want area’s hospital to be elevated to the provincial status.In a statement, council chairman Araka Matundura said elevation of the facilities and improvement of local roads will help to meet demands of the regions increasing population.
