Kisumu East MP Shakeer Shabir has asked for forgiveness from the Gusii community for the atrocities committed against them during the 2007 post-election violence in Kisumu. Shakir called on those who fled to return as a way of reconciliation. "During the post-election violence, I and Ida Odinga hired buses to ferry the Kisii's who were displaced from Kisumu to Kisii to ensure their safety. I am ready again to hire the buses to ferry them back to Kisumu to start life afresh," the MP said.
Speaking at Nyamarambe in South Mugirango during Prime Minister Raila's tour, Shakir claimed that thugs from Uganda took advantage of the volatile situation to loot. "We want to live like brothers and sisters and that is why we are asking those who were displaced from Kisumu to return because what they experienced will never happen again.
MP Manson Nyamweya said there is need to nurture good relationship with the neighbouring community because unity is a driving force in 2012.
