Simeon Nyachae to chair Kisii unity talks

Former Nyaribari Chache MP Simeon Nyachae has agreed to spearhead talks to unite the Kisii community. He held a meeting with Kisii leaders and professionals at a Westlands hotel on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the unity. Nyachae, who has since reiterated his retirement from active politics, said he will not shy away from offering advice. He told the group that he has no political interest, but will be happy to see the Kisii community speak in one voice.

The meeting, convened under Gusii Consultative Forum, resolved to hold a major retreat for all Kisii leaders during the last week of July to strategise on how to run regional rallies to preach their unity. The meeting brought together former MPs who worked with Nyachae during his time at the Ford People party and presidential campaigns in 2002.

They were Omingo Magara, Hezron Manduku, Stephen Manoti, Henry Obwocha, Mwancha Okioma, Zepedeo Opore, Joel Onyacha, Jimmy Angwenyi, Masanya Okeri and Joseph Kiangoi. Lawyers Mose Nyambega, Nyaboke Njagi, Stephen Mogaka, C M Ongoto, PNU’s John Anunda and PDP chairman Stephen Nyarangi were also present.

 Engineer Justus Mochoge, Luka Mogoa and Joash Nyamache said they invited Nyachae to seek his advice. “We wanted to share from the immense experience and wisdom of Mzee while recognising that he still wields a lot of influence among our people,” Mochoge said.
He insisted that the talks were not political but rather focused on social and economic issues affecting the Kisii community.

The conveners said that Nyachae had agreed not only to spearhead the unity talks but also engage other community leaders in seeking peaceful coexistence with their neighbours. “Our people suffered during post-election violence which we do not want to go back to and such a forum will look for ways of working and living harmoniously with our neighbours,” Nyambega said.

The Abagusii are neigbours to the Kipsigis to the East, Maasai to the South East and Luo to the South West. The development of the Kisii and Nyamira Counties were also on the Agenda, as well as the 2012 elections alliances. Nyachae is said to have cautioned the community from isolating themselves from the rest of the country.
