The Ministry of Information and Communication is committed to supporting establishment of vernacular radio stations as one way of implementing some tenets of the new constitution.

Unveiling a plaque to commission KBC owned Minto FM radio station that will broadcast in Ekegusii at Nyanguru in Kisii, Information and Communication Secretary Ezekiel Mutua said the move was in line with the new law.

Mutua who represented Information and Communication minister Samuel Poghisio at the launch underscored the role of vernacular radio stations in empowering the communities through access to information.

He however, cautioned that the information must be in the format palatable to the local consumers and commended the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation for its efforts to usher in the new digital platform era saying, the ministry was keen to promote and support similar initiatives.

KBC Managing Director Waithaka Waihenya said that the new station will live to its duty of observing objectivity, accuracy and fairness in news presentation.
