Peace committees have been established along Gucha South and Rongo boundary to resolve disagreements ahead of next year’s polls. Rongo DO1 Ami Ruria said more than 70 peace initiators from Rongo, Gucha South and Transmara have been trained in peace building and conflict resolution to enable them curb violence flare-ups during the election.
Ruria revealed that members of Active Citizens Initiative had undergone a one week training on peace and conflict resolution sponsored by the British council, Ministry of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs and Peace-Net, a Non-Governmental Organisation. Accompanied by her Gucha South counterpart David Tegutwa and Active Citizens Initiative chairman Samson Nyandoro, Ruria advised the peace initiators to ignore politicians who preach tribalism to gain selfish gains. “I am challenging the youths to venture into income generating activities to increase their standards of living instead of waiting for handouts from politicians,” Ruria said. “You must desist from dancing to the tune of politicians during political campaigns because they will capitalise on your poverty to gain power,” she added.
The administrator asked the peacemakers to campaign against spiraling domestic violence in the area and discard outdated cultures which discriminated against the girl-child.
Tegutwa rooted for unity among communities residing along common boundaries, stressing that unity was key for peace to grow. “I am urging the residents to proffer information which will help the law enforcers to apprehend bad elements among them in order to curb insecurity and enhance peace,” Tegutwa said.
