Police recapture four hardcore criminals, nine still on the run

Police in Kisii have recaptured four of 13 hardcore suspected criminals who escaped from custody as they were being transported to court Monday morning.

The suspects were being transported in a police lorry from Kisii Prison to Nyamira Law courts when they escaped at Nyabioto shopping centre.

According to police, the suspects jumped out as their lorry negotiated a corner. It is not clear if there was any form of collusion between the runaway criminals and police.

A major manhunt is underway to recapture the suspects. Police say they have recaptured four of the suspects who were facing robbery with violence charges. The officers who were escorting the suspects say they were caught by surprise as the suspected criminals escaped. They said they were ferrying them in an open lorry. It is emerging that the suspected criminals fled after throwing pepper at police officers who were  transporting them.
