Nyamira varsity students start 'empowering' hens project

Four University of Nairobi students have initiated an income generating venture for women and youth dubbed One Hen Campaign in Nyamira County. Working under the auspices of Innovation Empowerment Programme and with support from the Cereals Growers Association, the students buy hens and give one each and a cage to a beneficiary. The beneficiary in turn surrenders two chicks after six months to the programme to be given to other beneficiaries.
Speaking during the giving of hens to 30 members of Ensoko Women Group in Kitutu Masaba constituency, IEP boss James Makini said research had shown that one hen can produce 100 more in a year. These when sold can earn a farmer Sh 40,000. “I am optimistic that this project will help the beneficiaries jump out of poverty,” Makini said. Masaba North DOI Henry Kepkemboi lauded women in the area for playing a crucial role in the local economy. CGA chief executive officer David Nyameino said proper sensitisation will help alleviate poverty.
