ODM wins Kisii Mayoral seat in historic elections.

Orange Democratic movement Party (ODM) candidate triumphed in Kisii Municipal Council Mayoral elections in an election that saw incumbent mayor abstain.

Councilor Alloys Moseti of Getare Ward was elected un-opposed when the incumbent Mayor Sam Nyangeso failed to turn up to defend his seat.

It was a historic event and sweet victory for the ODM since the coveted seat has always been held by the Ford-People Party since 2008. In his victory speech, Councilor Moseti said he will unite all councilors for the sake of service delivery in the town.

“I’m going to work for the unity of the council so that we deliver our mandate,” he said. He asked Nyangeso to support the newly elected team saying they were not out to fight him but his poor leadership.

Nyanza Provincial Local Government Officer (PLGO) Isaac Kirui and town clerk William Chepkwony were present during the elections which were held at the town hall.

There was celebration in Kisii town as the local residents cheered Mr. Moseti up as he was driven round the town in a convoy of several vehicles.

Sammy Nyangenya of Ford People was elected the deputy mayor beating Central ward councilor Kepher Mogaka by nine to seven votes. Former deputy mayor Patrick Siro also failed to defend the seat.

Nominated ODM councilor Lucy Bosire beat Jane Justine by one vote to win the powerful finance committee seat. Bosire had eight votes against Justine’s seven.

Daraja Mbili councilor Willy Obiri of Kifagio Party was elected unopposed as the town planning committee chairman.

Others elected were Steve Arika (Education and Social Services), Kepher Mogaka (Public Health and Environment), Samuel Omwando (HIV/Aids), Patrick Siro (Audit Committee), Wilfred Monyenye (Joint Staff), and Isabella Mose
(Works and Housing).

ODM’s executive director Janet Ong’era hailed the triumph as historic adding that it illustrates that with unity of purpose ODM can achieve allot in the area.

Ms. Ong’era who hails from the Kisii County said that Moseti’s election demonstrates that ODM is the most popular party among the Abagusii community.

“I want to thank other political parties that joined hands to elect the new mayor, and it is such unity of purpose among political parties that Abagusii must emulate for future growth,” She said

Elsewhere in Tana River, ODM Councilor Golo Gure won the chairmanship of the Tana River County Council in a peaceful exercise held earlier today at the County Council Offices.
