Deputy PM Is Playing With Fire in Kisii

DEPUTY Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Education minister Prof Sam Ongeri, Heritage assistant minister Wilfred Ombui and Nyaribari Chache MP Robert Monda are expected to hold a fundraiser for 16 churches in Kisii this Sunday. They are playing with fire.

According to the constitution, the 2012 election should be in August. The government wants to shift it to December but that is subject to parliamentary approval and the High Court.

If Uhuru attends this Sunday's harambee, and if the election is in August, he would be barred from standing. The Elections Act 2011 forbids anybody standing for political office from participating in fundraising events from eight months before the election. If the election is supposed to be on August 15, 2012, that ban kicked last night.

The Election Act is binding. Various politicians are already preparing to make video recordings of harambees to get their opponents disqualified. And unlike past electoral petitions, there will be little argument. If you have attended a harambee within eight months of an election, it is a technical knock-out. Uhuru might still be able to stand if charges against him are confirmed by the ICC. He won't be able to stand if he has been to a harambee.
