Four in Court for Denying Children Immunisation

Four people in South Kisii were yesterday charged for disallowing their children to get immunized against polio.

Jones Ombati, Isaac Mwangi, Rachael Kadogo and Jerusha Mbone were charged for disallowing their children to get polio vaccine in the ongoing exercise.Appearing before chief magistrate Valentine Wandera, the four claimed they do not want their children immunised because of their faith.

According to the public health officer Thomas Oirere, they were forced to immunise the children during the first phase but since they have been unable to reach the children in phase two, three and four because of parents' stand. "Your honour, we managed to vaccinate the children during the first phase but because of the parents hard stand, we were unable to reach them for immunization in the other phases," Orere said.

Following the circumstances, Wandera directed children officers to assess the condition of the children before the court makes any decision. In mitigation, the four asked the court to respect their faith. "We pray to the court to respect our faith because it does not allow us to have our children immunised," they said. They however pleaded guilty and Wandera ordered that they be remanded in custody as the children officer carried investigation and they will appear in court in another date after conclusion of investigations.
