SOUTH Mugirango MP Manson Nyamweya has called for a performance evaluation of education officers and headteachers in the constituency. The MP said the move will help improve education standards in Gucha South district.
“The DEO, the entire inspectorate department and some headteachers should be transferred if we are to raise education standards. Most of the officers are sleeping on the job,” said Nyamweya.
Speaking to the Star on phone, the South Mugirango MP said the shuffle should be done before schools re-open in January. He said he had raised his complaints to the Teachers Service Commission accusing the officers and some teachers of doing little to raise education standards.
Nyamweya said non-performing headteachers and others who have overstayed in their stations should be transferred. He said there was a tendency by TSC and the Ministry of Education to transfer non-performing teachers to the district.
“We are not a dumping ground for non-performing teachers. Recently, six principals were moved and according to my opinion they lacked merit," added the assistant minister in the Ministry of Trade. He said the transfers should start with the DEO Elisha Omalla who said the transfers are effected on merit.
“Transfers are done on merit and upon recommendation by all the stakeholders but the MP wants 13 out of 42 principals moved out of the district without any justification,” Omalla said.
He said education officers were trying to do their best to improve education standards and denied Nyamweya’s allegations that they are sleeping on the job. The district was last in the province in last year’s national examinations.
