Nyamweya dismisses Kisii, Kalenjin meeting

ASSISTANT minister for Trade Manson Nyamweya has dismissed last Monday’s peace meeting between Kisii and Kalenjin communities as elitist and political. Nyamweya said the meeting had nothing to do with reconciling the two communities. “The meeting was all about politics of 2012 and nothing to do with peace and reconciliation,” the South Mugirango MP who skipped the meeting said.

Other MPs from Kisii who skipped the meeting at Chepilat were Bobasi MP Chris Obure and Bomachoge’s Simon Ogari. Nyamweya said for reconciliation to succeed the perpetrators of the violence should own up, apologise and seek forgiveness. “I am not against peace and reconciliation but that is not the way to go. Why were victims not allowed to talk at the meeting? Have they been allowed back to their homes,” Nyamweya asked.

“Some leaders are not genuinely interested in peace. What happened at Chepilat is just a show off and nothing to do with peace,” said the MP. “We still have thousands of integrated IDPs in Kisii and Nyamira counties. Have the leaders made any effort to have them back to their land?” he wondered.

Nyamweya further observed that it was the prerogative of the government to protect lives and property. Ogari, however, defended the talks but admitted that some politicians may use the platform to advance their political agenda. “The original intention of the talks is peace but some of us might exploit the opportunity for political gain.
