FORMER South Mugirango MP Omingo Magara has termed the declining education standards in Nyamira and Kisii counties as a time bomb.
Speaking to the Star, Magara said: "Poor performance of our children in national examinations coupled with diminishing land sizes in Kisii is a time bomb waiting to implode."
Magara termed the results an embarrassment to the community and called for an urgent stakeholders' forum to discuss the problem. "Kisii is a food basket yet candidates from hardship areas do better. How can parents pay for non-existent services in private schools? Such schools should be shut down and stringent measures put in place during registration," Magara said.
At the same time, the Ministry of Education has launched a probe on schools that performed dismally. Kisii district DEO Martin Mwalo said the private schools will be deregisterd and shut down. He said that it was disappointing to see that some proprietors of such schools have turned the institutions into money minting businesses. "We can't allow such schools to continue operating because the owners are only interested in money at the expense of quality," Mwalo said.
Mwalo said that it was disgusting that the private schools which register a few candidates compared to public schools performed dismally. Mwalo said head teachers in public schools that performed poorly should prepare for any eventuality next year. "We cannot afford to have head teachers in schools which perform poorly year in year out. They should prepare themselves for any outcome next term," Mwalo said
