Don't Plant Gum Trees On Rivers, Kisii Advised

An environmental expert yesterday said that many people in Kisii region will lack water if they continue planting blue gum trees near water sources.

Alexander Obwocha who is an environmental assessment expert noted that major rivers in the region were drying up because of the unplanned planting of such trees. "Unless people stop planting blue gums near water sources, then many areas will be hit by an acute water shortage in future," Obwocha said.

Speaking at Omoturumesi village in Nyaura ward during a water harvesting sensitization meeting, the expert urged residents who have since planted the trees along the sources to willingly cut them and plant environmental friendly ones. "Kisii region is well endowed with rivers but these rivers are almost drying up because of continued planting of eucalyptus trees along the banks," he added.

He said that the government has allocated Sh1 million for the construction of Riamaobe water project where residents will get water through gravity. "You must be ready to allow pipes to be laid on through your lands because this is a noble project aimed at supplying you with fresh water. The project will be completed by April," said.
