Greens prices soar in Kisii as dry spell sets in

An acuteshortage of vegetables has hit Kisii district, a month after heavy rains pounded the area. Prices of vegetables have either doubled or tripled in the past few weeks. As a result,some vegetable vendors have either pulled out of the business or have little tosell. Some hotels have put up notices advising customers not cabbage or sukuma wiki.  “If thecondition persists we will be forced to close business until rains returnbecause farmers who happen to have vegetables are capitalising on the harshweather to reap from us,” Stella Mwango a vegetable vendor in Kisii town said.

Mwangosaid they have been getting vegetables from as far away as Kilgoris in Narok county but started experiencing the shortage in December. She said that at present a sack of vegetables such as black shades (managu) costs Sh1,500,up from Sh800 in December. Mwango addedthat the same sack of the popular (kales) sukuma wiki which sold at Sh300last year now sells at Sh2,000.
