Leaders Oppose Borabu Boundaries

Leaders from the proposed Borabu constituency in Nyamira County yesterday opposed the inclusion of civic wards from Kitutu Masaba sayang that the locals never proposed so.

The morethan 100 leaders who met at Nyansiongo said they recommended to the Ligale ledcommission to divide North Mugirango/ Borabu by removing the stroke and not adivision between Borabu and Kitutu Masaba.

Led by area KNUT Executive secretary John Matiang'i , the leaders said that wards curved from Kitutu Masaba to create part of Borabu had a population of 60,000thus creating an impression that it was Kitutu Masaba that was split. "We never proposed from wards from Kitutu Masaba to form Boarabu what we proposed is the removal of the stroke. We oppose in totality the inclusion of those wards,"Matiang'i said.

The leaders added that they proposed to the Ligale led team that Borabu was a settlement scheme with its distinctive features and wondered why the Commission curved apart of itutu Masaba wards to Borabu and yet they never shared common features. "The court had earlier ruled that Kiangeni location be part of Borabu constituency but Borabu inhabitants were astonished when it was hived to be part of North Mugirango, against the court decision," Matiang'i contrary to the ruling.," he said.

The unionist said it was improper for the Commission to curve Kiangeni off and include Wards- Bocharia and North West county Wards from Kitutu Masaba and yet members of Parliament, Wilfred Ombui (North Mugirango/Borabu) and his Kitutu Masaba counterpart, Walter Nyambati had opposed the merging of Kitutu masaba Wards to be part of Borabu constituency.

Flanked by former Kisii Municipal mayor, Claire Onsando, Andrew Maati and youth leader Leonard Mogaru, Matiang'I said they will move to court the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission failed to factor the views of the people. "It is demoralizing that the the Ligale Commission omitted such essential views from the locals. We will seek court redress if IEBC fails to address the issue," Mogaru said.

Matiang'i noted Borabu has a population of 73,000 people, more that some constituencies in some parts of the country which had less than 70,000 people but had had been split without any interference with their electoral boundaries. He said North Mugirango/Borabu had a population of 239,243 and had qualified to be split with Nyansiongo, Esise, Mekenene and Kiangeni forming, stressing it would be better for the Commission to split it than merging the Wards with those of Kitutu Masaba, a reserve area.
