Kisii Gets Sh10 Million Fire Equipment

The Kisii municipal council yesterday received firefighting equipment worth Sh10 million from the ministry of Local Government. Town engineer William Wanyonyi said among the equipment include a location monitoring unit, delivery hoses, jackets, helmets and boots. "The location monitor which costs Sh5 million will help locate fire outbreaks within the municipality and adjacent areas," he said.

He said the council has been lacking such facilities that's why it was difficult for the council to contain some fire outbreaks. Wanyonyi said the council's two fire engines have since been repaired and were in good condition adding that the local authority will be able to cover as far as Nyansiongo. "We are informing Kisii residents that we are now fully equipped and they should report any fire outbreaks for quick action," Wanyonyi said.

About two weeks ago, police at the Kisii police station were compelled to use buckets to put off fire that gutted down their canteen because of lack of functional fire engines at the municipality which is just a few metres away. "We were forced to use buckets to put off the fire because the council failed to respond. The council has more to do in terms of containing the outbreak of fires," a police officer who did not want to be named said.
