Borabu demands police shakeup

A regional commissioner yesterday intervened and brought calm to Nyansiongo in Borabu district following day-long protests by residents over the state of insecurity. Eastern Nyanza regional commissioner Lydiah Muriuki visited the area hours after the residents staged the demonstration which paralysed transport along Kisii-Nairobi highway. The residents staged the protests following the killing of an administration police officer by armed thugs on Tuesday night after a foiled robbery attempt at a supermarket in the area.

Addressing the protesters, who had barricaded the road with huge stones and lit bonfires, Muriuki asked them to maintain peace saying their security was guaranteed. “It is good that you’ve raised your concerns but you must also understand that blocking roads is not a solution to any problem,” she said.

During the protests, the residents demanded a total overhaul of security officers in the district because they had failed to combat crime. “We want the minister for Internal Security to reshuffle the security personal here because it seems they are sleeping on the job,” a resident said. The locals claimed that the slain officer was shot by his colleagues who were on a robbery mission. They said the killers would only be brought to book if the current officers are transferred. “We don’t want anybody be victimised at this juncture but we will do everything possible to ensure that the culprits are brought to book,” Muriuki said.

She said she had reached an agreement with the residents on the way forward saying and that dialogue was paramount in solving any arising crisis. The 8pm incident came barely a week after armed gangsters shot dead their colleague and injured his brother in Chepilat along Sotik-Borabu border. “We are tired of insecurity in this district. We want something serious be done to make those charged with the responsibility of providing security,” a resident who only identified himself as Charles said.
