MP decries rising insecruity in Nyamira

West Mugirango Borabu MP Wilfred Ombui over the weekend decried soaring insecurity in Nyamira county in the past few months. Ombui said it is disturbing that a group of people have been terrorizing area residents without the relevant authorities taking any action.

Ombui blamed the provincial administration and security agents for the current lapse where many people have been injured or lost their lives. “There is no need to have the provincial administration and police in the district if they cannot provide security to the residents,” Ombui said.

The legislator cited a recent case where two men were shot by thugs at Chepilat along the Borabu-Sotik border despite the police post being just a few metres from the trading centre. “We have a GSU camp, regular and administration police posts in the area but none answers distress calls by residents. This means something serious needs be done,” Ombui said.

The MP said that about a month ago, cattle rustlers from Sotik shot area resident Geoffrey Makori with an arrow in his eye. He said Makori was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, and then to Elgon View Hospital where the arrow was removed.

Ombui said that they are trying to raise funds to offset the over sh 300, 000 hospital bill at the hospital because the old man cannot afford. “It is disturbing that those charged with providing security to the residents are sleeping on their job because they have neve4r managed to bring any culprit,” added he.

In another shocking incident, Ombui claimed a primary school teacher was raped while her ten year-old-daughter was defiled but police have done little to arrest those involved. He reprimanded area DC Hassan Mohhamed who is also the district security committee chairman saying that he had failed to combat the rising insecurity. He said due to the rise in crime and cattle rustling in the area , MPs from Kisii have arranged for a meeting to address the problems saying that they will afterwards hold a meeting with counterparts from Rifty Valley at Chepilat as a measure to curbing such practices.

However Mohammed said that cases of stock theft in the district have declined by over 90 percent because of the concerted efforts from both sides. Borabu KNUT Executive Secretary John Matiang’i claimed that many people including Professor Japhet Maranga have been killed but none of the culprits has been brought to book.

He called on the government to address the increasing incidents of crime in  the area for the sake of the residents. Ombui said as leaders from the region they will not sit and watch as residents are killed as others are terrorized by organized gangs saying that police must take responsibility. “We can’t understand why the police are sleeping on their job.As a leader we cannot condone suck kind of reckless killings of people by gangsters,” he said.
