15 aspirants cleared for Kitutu Masaba election

The Interim Independent Electoral Commission cleared 15 candidates to battle it out in the Kitutu Masaba by-election. Area returning officer Fredrick Odenge said that the 15 met the laid down requirements. Two hopefuls, Richard Masese and Phillip Bosire, were not cleared because they did not meet requirements.

Masese failed to show up at the clearing centre at Manga because did not get a clearance certificate from the Kenya Revenue Authority. Bosire was locked out after his party presented two names.

Those cleared are Timothy Bosire (ODM), Walter Nyambati (PNU), Nyambega Mose (Narc-K), Samson Okioma (Ford-P), former PC Zachary Ogongo (Narc), Henry Obwaya (PPK), Okibo Reuben Motari (NVP), Moreka John Ratemo (DP), Abuga Dickson Mokaya (NPP), and Atati Kengere (KSC).

Others are Alex Apoko (Ringtone) of (VIPA.P.P.K.), Patrick Meroka (GNU), Francis Manyibe (FPK), Shadrack Mose (KNC) and Nyameino Keneth Atuti (KADDU).

Odenge warned that those found breaching electoral rules would be penalised, as his office would be looking out for electoral malpractice.

Addressing the press, Nyanza South regional elections coordinator Sarah Ogaro expressed her concern that no party nominated a woman candidate. Ogaro asked the parties to take women seriously and nominate them. She urged women not to shy away from competing with men, saying the field was open to everyone. Candidates called for peaceful campaigns, saying that was the only way true democracy could be realised.

Earlier, the IIEC rejected a request by Apoko to have his stage name appear on the ballot. Apoko is a musician commonly known as Ringtone. “We can’t include the name in the ballot paper because it is not your official name. We will use the names that appear in your documents,” Odenge said.

During the exercise the musician also failed to produce his party symbol, a move that prompted the returning officer to give him three hours to produce it or it would not be included on the ballot paper.

At the same time Apoko was turned away after it emerged that one of his proposers had no valid elector’s card and was required to produce another one with a valid card.
