Armed thugs on Monday shot dead a man and injured his brother before they stole Sh300,000 in cash and airtime worth Sh200,000 from a shop in Chepilat along Sotik-Borabu border. Jared Mauti, 32, died of the gunshot wounds while his younger brother, Dominic Mauti sustained injuries in the leg during the 7.30pm incident at Stage Mat shop.
Dominic, who was treated and discharged from Keroka District Hospital, was later arrested by detectives from Sotik to assist in investigations. The authorities said they had information that his record "was not straight" in his Gucha South home district. In an interview before his arrest, Dominic said he was standing outside an eatery with his brother, where they worked as casuals, when the attackers shot at them before they raided a shop owned by Nyamira Town Council chairman Alfayo Ngeresa.
According to Ngeresa's wife Miriam Moraa, the thugs stormed the shop at around 7.30pm on Monday night, ordered them to lie down and they ransacked the place. Moraa said she heard one of the thugs say they would kill her husband if those in the shop did not cooperate. 'I saw five of them enter the shop and I a minute they ordered us to lie down or else they kill my husband. I thank God that my husband fully cooperated that is when they got an opportunity to ransack the whole shop," she said.
