Aspirants in the forthcoming Kitutu Mabasa by-election were yesterday warned against addressing or distributing their posters in the constituency before the official campaign period.
Returning officer Fredrick Odenge warned that stern action will be taken against those found violating the order. “I want to wan the candidates to desist from circulating their posters or addressing the supporters because anybody who will be found should not regret the consequences to follow,” Odenge warned.
He spoke at Manga district IIEC offices during the clearing exercise of candidates. By the time we went to press six of the 12 candidates had been cleared.
However Kaddu candidates Phillip Bosire and Nyameino Kenneth failed to get clearance after the party listed two names on the nomination list.
Odenge said that they commission would not clear any of the candidates saying that it was their party to solve the anomaly. Nyanza Kaddu official Justus Rasugu blamed registrar of parties Lucy Ndung’u for failing to notice the anomaly on the list. “The registrar should tell us who sneaked the second name in the list. This was a deliberate attempt to lock out our candidate,” Rasugu said.
Those who had been cleared are Timothy Bosire (ODM), Walter Nyambati (PNU), Nyambega Mose (Narc-K), former PC Zachary Ogongo (Narc), Okibo Reuben Motari (NVP) and Moreka John Ratemo (DP).
Those who were expected to be cleared in the afternoon were Samson Okioma (Ford-P), Abuga Dickson Mokaya (NPP), Atati Kengere (KSC) and Shadrack Mose (KNC).
After he was cleared Bosire said he is optimistic that he will be elected the next area MP come November 28. “I know the electorate will choose a leader who has their interests at heart. The 2007 election was not fair and transparent,” Bosire said. He said that he will abide by the laws of the land in carrying out his campaigns saying that democracy thrives in a peaceful environment.
Nyambega Mose also called for peaceful campaigns saying that the constituency requires a short time to recover if the constituents elected a visible leader.
Odenge announced that campaigns will begin on November 6 saying he will not condone cases where aspirants break the law. “I want to remind all candidates that they risk disciplinary action if they violate the rules by engaging in early campaigns. Have clearly indicated that they will start on November 6,” he said.
The RO said that a consultative meeting with the aspirants will be held on next week on Monday adding that he will sermon those who will be found circulating posters before the date announced. Other candidates will be cleared today.
